A3.9 Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY) burden per case
DALY models incorporate information on different disease outcomes, including:
long term consequences (a condition which is the consequence of a previous disease or injury)
disease duration
disease severity (disability weights)
age at death.
Specifically, DALY/case estimates provide information about the severity of an average case of disease caused by each pathogen. DALY per 1000 cases estimates for the Australian context have been developed for six pathogens and are summarised in Table A3.6 (Gibney et al. 2014). These six pathogens accounted for 27% of the estimated number of all-cause infectious acute gastroenteritis cases in Australia in 2010. DALY/case estimates incorporate the contribution of the long-term consequences of acute gastroenteritis for Campylobacter (Guillain–Barré syndrome, reactive arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome) and Salmonella (reactive arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome).
